Yuletide 2020: Dear Author Letter
Dear Yuletide Author,
Thank you so much for writing for me!
First of all, I want to say that I generally feel like people write best when they are writing things they love! I have some likes and dislikes here, but just know, in general I have very broad tastes. If you have certain kinks and tropes that are especially close to your heart or you are inspired to write and you are nervous about writing them for me, unless I listed them as something I specifically DNW, you have my full blessing. If I didn't list something as a DNW, it isn't a squick for me, even if it's something that is often squicky or triggery for many people. Inversely, just because something isn't on my likes list doesn't mean I won't like it. If you think something is a little out there, just trust me: I will probably love it.
Everything here is just ideas, things I usually like, and starting points, so hopefully something in here inspires you. If you have other ideas or are inspired to go in a different direction, follow your heart. I leave myself in your capable hands.
Likes: historical research and detail, shippy stuff of all varieties (het/slash/femslash), humor, characters of all levels of morals, complicated relationships, happy endings, un-happy endings, small moments, backstory, getting-together, intense feelings and relationships, forced proximity (only one bed, huddling for warmth, etc.), hurt/comfort, pastiche, unusual formats and storytelling, epistolary fic

1. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Hunter S. Thompson
Raoul Duke
I am really into the idea of crossovers with this one. I love Thompson's writing, as seen through his alter-ego Raoul Duke, and just want to hear Duke tell me about what wild experience he is having in the way that only he can. Fear and Loathing in [location of your choice]. I would love a crossover with any canon that you want to really show me the setting of, through the drug-added eyes of our favorite doctor of journalism. There is no need to explain how Duke has ended up where he is, if you don't want, he rarely does anyway. Drop him wherever you want. He is on a space station/in Middle Earth/transported to the Age of Sail, and it is not even the weirdest thing that has happened to him this year. He is here on a journalistic assignment, he is on many drugs, and he is rolling with it, perhaps with his companion Dr. Gonzo.
Some particular settings that I am familiar with and would be happy to see crossed-over: Deep Space Nine (or literally any Star Trek setting), Sunnydale, Middle Earth.
However, it is fine if I am not familiar with your crossover canon. If I’m not familiar, it’ll be a zany tour of a new setting. Sci-fi/fantasy settings seem particularly well-suited, but are by no means necessary. If you have a historical bent, let's explore the historical time and place of your choosing! Even a tropey AU would be fun, so I am fine with alternate setting AUs for this prompt.
Also if you want to write something shippy, by all means, I would be absolutely delighted to see what Raoul Duke/Dr. Gozo slash is like, crossover or not. I do not have any specific prompts, besides a confidence that drugs are involved, that Duke would have some wild things to say about it all, and that I would have fun reading it.
2. Ghosts (TV 2019)
The Captain
I loved the mix of funny and heartfelt and sometimes sad in this show, and I especially loved the Captain. I would like to read about him getting up to some romantic and/or sexual exploits, before or after death. I am pretty much fine with any slash ship for the Captain! Captain/ Havers, Captain/Pat, Captain/Julian, Captain/Thomas all sound fun to me. I also really love the ensemble comedy and growing friendships between all the ghosts and Alison and Mike, so I would be happy to see any of them show up in the fic as well!
If you go for a ghost/ghost ship, I am curious about the possibilities of ghost sex, with one another. Important ghost sex considerations: Can they undress? Thomas's disappearing letter suggests no, but one of the plague ghosts flashing everyone suggests that their bodies at least exist underneath their clothes. So undoing flies and whipping it out? Do fluids disappear? How have they variously discovered the limits of ghost sex? Would the Captain literally die (again) if any of them tried to discuss it with him?If you want to go the smut route but don't ship any of the ghosts with one another, let's see the Captain (or all of them) figure out jacking off post-Death. Did anybody living in particular around the house get his spectral blood flowing?
If you wanted to go a Captain/Havers route, I would be delighted to see as much historical detail as you want to give me. Feel free to really go nuts on the historical research on gay relationships and sex in the British military in WWII. I don't know much about that particularly historical situation and am eager to learn! Also, I do not need a happy ending and am fine with the level of tragedy we have seen in canon with regards to this relationship. If you wanted to combine the angst and the smut to a situation where they were having sex but had not discussed feelings or one or both of them assumed it was situational, I would enjoy that.
As far as tone, with any of these prompts, I am fine with angst and sadness (the show made me cry more than once, after all), but even for the more serious prompts, if you want to keep things light and goofy and in the tone of the show, that is fine too. If you do go a smutty route and it comes out funnier than it is hot, that is fine, it is fitting. I would definitely enjoy a good romp or sex comedy for ol' Cap!
3. What We Do in the Shadows (TV)
Laszlo Cravensworth
I love all the characters on this show, but it was probably inevitable that the horniest idiot of them all would be my favorite. I would like to read about Laszlo having silly, and possibly horny, adventures! I am happy with any ship you would want to go with: Laszlo/Nadja, Laszlo/Nandor, and Laszlo/Guillermo come to mind, but if you want to ship him with somebody else, I am totally down and probably so is he! I am also totally happy with threesomes and moresome, mix and match with the ships as you please. One request is that while I don't need there to be a totally formalized, modern-style polyamory situation (the vampires are, after all, kind of messes), I would prefer if Nadja not be jealous if you are shipping Laszlo with somebody else and if you did not lean into the infidelity angle. While I'm fine with other ships, I do like their marriage.
Some assorted ideas: an experience at another orgy, maybe one that didn't fail, or failed in a completely different way; Laszlo and Nadja's early relationship; the first time Laszlo and Nandor had sex; pick any historical time period you want and tell me what kind of hijinks and hookups Laszlo could have gotten up to; what if porn wasn't the only sex work Laszlo tried his hand at, also set in whatever time period you want to play around in; Laszlo starts making pornos again, only the scene has changed, so now he is camming (he might need Guillermo's help with the technology).
If you go with Laszlo/Nadja, and want to write smut, I would adore some femdom for them. Some ideas for the two of them: doing things that would kill a mortal (also good for Laszlo/Nandor or any other Laszlo/vampire ship); blood stuff; role-playing (is 'familiar-play' a thing for vampires??); using sex toys and/or torture devices; spanking or caning; Nadja keeping Laszlo in chastity.
It is totally fine if you do not want to write on-page sex (however, I will eagerly read smut if you want to write it!), and instead go a romp-y, sex comedy route, where the sex is happening off-page for comedy and plot reasons, similar to the orgy episode. If you do want to write sex and it is funnier than it is hot, that is also great, I love the humor of the show and will definitely enjoy fic with a similar vibe.
4. This is Spinal Tap (1984)
David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel
I would really love some Nigel/David! So much of the movie is about their relationship, their 'break-up', and their reuniting, and I would be delighted to see an explicitly romantic angle on this. That said, we know that things can be tumultuous between them, and I am totally fine if the romance is complicated: they were together but then broke up, they had an on-again-off-again, they hooked up but never dated (those long months on the road, those hotel rooms), there were rumors about their relationship but nothing has ever been confirmed, that sort of thing.
I think this one would be really fun to get creative with the format, considering the mockumentary style of the movie. Some ideas: anything told through in-universe media or interviews; an interview where they are asked about the rumors of their relationship (which are true or not, and they admit to or not); rock magazine or tabloid stories about them and the band; in-universe Spinal Tap RPF; a ship manifesto for Nigel/David theorizing how they are together, and what the documentary didn't or couldn't show; a "X years on" documentary follow up; I am sure plenty of other angles that I am not thinking of!
Go for any time period you want: before, during, or after the events of the movie. What is going on with them ten, twenty, thirty years on? Or what was it like during the early days?
Also, I am fine if you would like to include Jeanine, and do not mind if David cheats on her (that's rock stars for you), but would probably prefer if this was not the focus. It is fine to mention them breaking up.
