Today’s post is the last of three go-to pieces of criticism suggested by Matt Hills: his first was for fan studies generally; his second, for Doctor Who, and today we get his last.  –FC

~~~
Lastly, if I had to absolutely and artificially name just one title that has cut across a huge swathe of my work since it was published (and formed the basis of an entire book of mine responding to its ideas — Doctor Who: The Unfolding Event from 2015) then it would probably come down to this, in terms of the sheer number of times that I’ve cited it and built on its ideas…
One Quote to Rule Them All, Perhaps:
different contexts of delivery and the paratexts that often provide such contexts expand the text, in the process offering different possibilities for its valuation. If “aura” is the sense of a text’s authenticity and authority—which, by nature, could never be an actual, uncontested quality of a text, only a discursively constructed value—while Benjamin focuses on how reproduction can lessen aura, surely we might explore ways in which reproduction might change the text, add context, “tradition,” and “presence,” and thereby increase aura.
         The Two Towers DVDs wrap the film in aura; housed in an attractive, high-quality box, the discs are filled with explicit and implicit grabs at the title of “Work of Art.”  (Gray 2010: 97)
It’s from Show Sold Separately: Promos, Spoilers and Other Media Paratexts by Jonathan Gray (2010). Not really a fan studies book per se, but it sometimes gets treated as such, I feel. And Martin Barker (2017) wrote a journal article on how the concept of the “paratext” had become vital to fan studies in the wake of Gray’s intervention. In a sense, this work might encapsulate the first two academic texts that I’ve mentioned above - both of them are really about how fans consume, interpret, and commune with paratextual materials such as comic-con souvenirs or official magazines. Gray’s scope is very wide-ranging, taking in industry “hype” as much as fan-created paratexts, but I think that his ahead-of-the-curve turn to paratextuality continues to be indispensable for theorising fandom in our social media-framed, platformised, and algo-ridden present, where fans are constantly navigating, negotiating and creating (as well as trying to tune out, evade, or viscerally reject) worlds and whorls of proliferating paratextual matter comprising of widely differing cultural politics.
We survived Monday! It was a busy day, but not terrible. It was busy, but we got a lot of people in, and started working on my new project, which required a spreadsheet. I'm always down to make a spreadsheet about it. There's something empowering about conquering data manipulation on Excel. I don't do it enough for it to become routine.
My stomach held off til the end of day to really start getting upset. It meant that I was able to eat my eggs in the morning, plus something for lunch. Dinner was pretty much as washout.
So I know I mentioned yesterday that I've started applying for kitties. Well, we got a bite back yesterday about a kitty named Celeste. She's a special needs cat who has Feline Leukemia, but is in remission. She could live 2 years, she could live her whole life without symptoms, it's a toss up.
I wasn't sure I was ready for a special needs cat after Boodle, but she needs us. Her previous family had her for 3 years, which is where she got FELV. Once they found out, they returned her to the rescue, where she's been for 8 months. There was something about her sweet little face in this picture that hooked me.
We were told that we should come and meet her, and then see how it goes, and that we should bring a cat carrier in case it went well. So, of course, I have no gone on Chewy and ordered half the site. She needed new Water and food bowls, and a new cat tree! And a new carrier!
Hopefully, things will go well. I've already set up an appt with our vet for a checkup right after we get her. We'll need to assess her heath, and then make a plan to keep her as healthy as possible, so we can have her for as long as possible.
Today, I shall see how my nausea does. Hopefully, I'll be able to eat some good things before the nausea hits. Yesterday, I learned that while plain eggs are good, an omlette with cheese and bacon is not. That made me nauseous. Go figure. I ended up tossing the omlette and making plain scrambled eggs instead. With sourdough bread. If I'm feeling exceptionally creative, I'd slice to pieces of bread and make toad in the holes.
Today, my two big bosses are down at the main hospital, and I've been put in charge of emails and the STAT list while they're gone, so the day should go quickly. I will need to be extra organized today.
This is going to be a busy weekend. Friday night, we have the Amazing Digital Circus finale. I've been spoiled about the ending, and I gotta say, choices were made. They may not have been the choices I would have made, but I'm looking forward to it anyway. Then, Saturday morning we drop Yoda off for a day of fun, and have the He-Man movie. It looks stupid and fun, so I'm there. My sister has something going on, so we thought it might be good for him to have a day at his camp. Afterwards, we'll have to decide what we want to do. We don't have to pick up the dog til 6, so we'll have a few hours. Some of it will be putting together the new cat tree, I imagine.
Then, Sunday, we have a game, and then we meet the baby.
Okay, time for me to hop off and go forth. Everyone have an terriffic Tuesday!
[community profile] birdfeeding is a community started on January 1, 2023. It's all about birdfeeding, birdwatching, and other topics relating to birds. It also touches on nature in general, and observations that may effect bird activity such as local weather. Both text and image posts are welcome. Now is a great time to join as hungry birds are easy to attract with a feeder.
Community resources include posts about birding events, nurseries that sell seeds or plants attractive to birds, bird identification apps, the benefits of birdwatching, and other useful materials. Check out the anchor posts from Three Weeks for Dreamwidth.
Quick note that post-by-email and comment-by-email is (sometimes?) failing silently without actually posting right now! I'm pretty sure this is related to last night's shenanigans and will be fixed once Mark can finish the full fix for it, which he's working on, but if you've posted or replied by email in the last 24 hours, fish it out of your sent folder to check if it posted!
EDIT: This should be fixed as of around 7AM EDT! We *believe* everything that was stuck in the plumbing has been sent along to your journal or the comment thread it was meant for; it's definitely not where it was stuck anymore, at least.
It's hard to write about an advanced reader copy of one of the most coveted science fiction releases of the quarter. I tried, multiple times, to collect some thoughts about Platform Decay, the latest release in The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. I failed, every time, because my love for this series is immense, but also hard to quantify. Finding the words to describe sincere emotions? Ugh. Therefore, Platform Decay is already out, and you can read it now via your library or favorite indie bookstore!
Platform Decay is the eighth entry in The Murderbot Diaries, following our hero as it stages a high stakes rescue on Corporate Ringworld. It's working apart from its usual allies, it must infiltrate and escape the station with several squishy humans, and oh right, a former enemy asks for its help, complicating the extraction. Nothing can go wrong!
(Things immediately go wrong.)
To make matters worse, it's also dealing with an emotional health module. What's more stressful than a hostage situation in corporate territory? Mobile therapy. Murderbot must protect its humans (no pressure), avoid corporate forces that would love to slurp its kidnapped humans into corporate slavery (assholes), and navigate across a hostile station where one mistake could cost it everything (business as usual!). Star Trek TOS: Equilibrium by PSW
Fandom: Star Trek: TOS
Pairings/Characters: McCoy & Spock & Kirk
Rating: T
Length: 152,048 words
Creator Links: PSW
Theme: just like canon
Summary: McCoy's transport is destroyed in what appears to be a containment field explosion, leaving no known survivors. The truth, however, is not so simple as that ...
Reccer's Notes: McCoy is kidnapped by non-Federation aliens that force him to work for them in a medical capacity treating other kidnapped individuals.  Meanwhile Kirk and Spock think McCoy has been killed in an explosion.  I think this fits the "just like canon" theme because the quality, plot, and the writing of this fic is as good as any Trek tie-in novel, and may in fact be better.  There is a quite a bit of hurt!Bones in this as he struggles to survive and try to escape the situation he is in.  At the same time Spock and Kirk are trying their best to deal with their grief over the loss of their friend, and not always doing that in the healthiest of ways.  All while there is a greater plot about these new aliens and what they are trying to achieve, and some original characters that I really enjoyed.
May Writing and June Plans
My writing news for May: I have finished a draft of The Paper Bird! It clocks in around 15,000 words, which is a somewhat awkward length, but WHATEVER, I have a draft a draft is DONE a draft is COMPLETE it may be a terrible draft but it is FINISHED. And the length may end up changing in revisions anyway.
I am in that part of the composition process where you have no idea whether a story is good or how much it will need to be revised. I plan to let the story cool until after my birthday (which realistically means "after the Fourth of July weekend") before I start revisions.
June plans: I have two stories out on submission, two short stories out for beta, and one short story I need to revise before it goes out for beta too. Need to send out at least one submission to fulfill my One Submission a Month goal. Might send out more, as there are many interesting calls for submission this month, especially for horror stories. Presumably short fiction venues are gearing up for spooky season. So I might end up writing a new short story or two. Even if they're not accepted, they could strengthen the ranks. I've currently got nine unpublished short stories capable of making the rounds.
Also contemplating some possible longer projects, but so far nothing has leapt ahead of the pack yelling "WRITE ME NOW." So we shall see what might develop there.
Rating: Teen
Length: 180,411 words
Theme: Just Like Canon, Gen, Epic Works
Summary:
Doom comes to Hawkins, Indiana. Population est. 30,000.
It's cold, that's all, and the breeze is kicking up. That's why Steve feels the chill go up his spine like someone dropped an ice-cube down his back.
"Why wouldn't I be real, El?"
"The Aboleth got you."
Reccer's Notes: This fic is just like a season of the show, with a new big bad and EVERYBODY (from S2) in it, the voices expertly rendered, and the story well told. Highly recommended.
Black Swan Hudson and Connie From Accounts, at the end of the party.
Couldn't resist using one of my favourite pics of them as a reference. Hard to figure out the fandom, though. I initially called it Actor RPF but it's not fiction, in that it's not invented, or a written work. So I've just called the fandom "Hudson Williams & Connor Storrie". The "Connie from Accounts" reference is from a tumblr bit because it's honestly what Connor looks like in that outfit, if Connie from Accounts bench pressed 150 lb on the regular, anyway!
On AO3 here.
Hudson Williams in black swan makeup, smiling happily, with his head, eyes closed, on Connor Storrie's shoulder. Connor is looking down, smiling, wearing a designer top and jewelery.
