Please join us for the weekly TS chat on Saturday, October 4th, at 7 pm Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)/19:00 UTC. That could be as early as 12 pm if you’re on the west coast of North America, or 3 pm if you’re on the east coast, or 8 pm in the UK, or early Sunday morning in Australia or New Zealand.

We’re in the usual place: http://us25.chatzy.com/81935648447483. There’s nothing to download or install, just choose a name and a color and click on “join chat.”

It’s the first Saturday of the month, which means it’s time for an episode watch! We’re up to the third episode of season two – Deep Water. While Jim and Blair try to solve the mystery of Jim’s former partner’s disappearance, we get to see what Jim was like in his earlier days at CPD (and it’s fascinating!)

See you there!

Here is my series (in progress) for Kinktober 2025. Every day will be at least one limerick, with some verse cycles when I get too inspired to constrain myself to one at a go.

Thus far, I am leaning in the Obi-Wan/Anakin + Padmé on bass direction. There may be other guest stars. We'll see! Each day is posted separately for tagging purposes.

The prompt list I am using is here. Put in a plug for your favorite and we'll see what I can manage!

Six years late to The Expanse show

On the life front, I'm furloughed but so far still employed. Can't say I mind that much tbh. It's been an awful year and I needed the break.

***

I leant my niece Leviathan Wakes a couple weeks ago, and she texted me two days later "do you have the next book?" So I leant her the next three books. Then she's on her own with getting them from the library. I checked out the audiobook and relistened to LW too, and I forgot how much I really love these.

Now when I first read The Expanse it was a few months before the show started. I read books 1-3 with watching the show in mind, but then as so often happens, it was a long enough break that I didn't end up watching the show. I also took a break before reading book 4 (I don't think 5 was out at the time, or it was coming out soon, or something?), and didn't get to book 4. This is a very common pattern for me with in progress series.

Anyway. My reread of Leviathan Wakes got me all excited again and reminded me how good they are and how much they've shaped how I think about modern sci-fi. So I'm waiting on Calaban's War on audio from the library (because my niece has our hardback copy) and after I got home from my orderly shutdown on Wednesday, I binged the first season of the show.

The show does such a good job! I'm really enjoying it! The vision of the world and bringing it to life is so cool. I'm really glad they brought in Avasarala in the first season because she is one of my favorite characters, and it really adds to the depth of the story from the beginning.

***

While I wait for Calaban's War, I got Jade City from the library too. Jumping in the deep end on that one too. I'm only a few chapters in and it's good so far.

It's Friday! They're almost done the project. The dude said he'd be here today, then the painters come Monday. Tues or Wed we should have a washer and dryer! They've been absolute sweethearts. They discovered that Jess recently had surgery, so they have been bringing in heavy packages, and generally being awesome, while getting the work done super fast.

Yesterday was a bit of a cluserfuck. I got ready and hauled all my shit to the coworking office. For four hours, things went great. Enormous monitor, very nice chair, very quiet and private. Then, just after noon, the internet went down. I waited a few minutes, but it didn't come back up. Poked my head out, and it turns out that the power went off on half the building, and it was going to be a couple of hours to get it back up. So, I closed down and went to head back home, only to find that the elevator is in the half of the building that has no power. On the fifth floor.

Knowing that I only have two hours to get back online before I have to start using PTO, I braved the stairs. It was not pleasant. I had my bag with my computer and accouterments, and the dishes from lunch. I would not like to do it again.

I got home, and sat for a while, until the worker went outside to get supplies, then I squeezed into my sister's room and got set up again. Fortunately, it seems like they're done with most of the loud stuff, so it wasn't bad.

I think today I'm going to just stay home and do my job here. I'll have to move my shit tomorrow to my normal desk, since I'm working on Saturday, but that's okay.

Tonight, I have my monthly psych appt. We're going to have to discuss changing my ADHD meds, because the insurance is not going to cover them any more. So, farewell Vyyvanse, hello Azstarys.

Tomorrow, we take Yoda for his interview with Camp Bow Wow. This should be interesting. Hopefully, he does well, and we can start depositing him in day care for a few hours here and there, working up to overnights. I am stressing more about this than I was about the work they're doing.

My sister has been incredibly interactive today, and I need a drink. I shall persevere. At least I had my normal half hour of peace and quiet. Okay, everyone have an excellent Friday!

It better not awaken anything in me (it will).

At first I was like...Harry Melling? Really? For the sexy viking BDSM motorbike movie? That's a choice. But then I watched the trailer and now I'm more convinced. Apparently he's actually quite a good actor? I haven't seen him in anything but The Old Guard and Merlin since his HP days, I don't think. I do stand by what I said on bsky about Harry Trevaldwyn being my personal pick for weird timid British guy gets his world rocked by BDSM, but I'm willing to give Harry Melling a chance.

Murderbot saying "buy a butt plug" certainly was something.

Here's the trailer if you'd like to join me in anticipating when this is finally available to watch. It's showing at VIFF next weekend and releasing in the UK end of November. No North America release dates yet, wah.

This is in the same vein of Politics in Space as the time I wrote Josh Lyman of The West Wing being Princess Leia Organa's political advisor because she'd inherited him from her father, Matt Santos Jimmy Smits Bail Organa, and then they observed Space Passover.

Malcolm Tucker of The Thick of It (link is very sweary) deserves someone he can really look up to (metaphorically) and cuss out (effectively).

I propose Chrisjen Avasarala of the Expanse (link is very sweary and also spoilery), who can give as good as she gets in the cussin' department. Malcolm can't physically look up to her, as she is a tiny Indian (subcontinent) grandmother who dresses fabulously. That won't stop her from kicking his ass.

I'm not sure he'd approve of her tactics, but he's on Team Earth all the way, unless one takes Peter Capaldi's legginess and runs with it to the wonderful world of Malcolm Tucker, Belter, sasa?

I am in the position of having studied English, Spanish, French, German, and Mandarin to the point of being able to mostly follow Belter Creole in audiobook form, where there are no footnotes to be had nor glossaries. Hell if that means I can write it, let alone write Malcolm Tucker Swearing in it, but now I want to try.

Kindly remind me that only about one other person on Earth, Mars, or in the Belt or Jovian system would understand this goddamn story, so it's not worth the effort, because I am very tempted. Unless of course it sounds like fun to you, in which case, can I get a beta offer?

Every Thursday, we have a community post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments.

This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget: you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. ;D!)

So what cool fancrafts/fanart/fics/fanvids/podfics/other kinds of fanworks have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

BTW, AI fanworks are not eligible for reccing at recthething. If you aware that a fanwork is AI-generated, please do not rec it here

Hey all!

A Discord-fan named Mal has come up with a due South/C6D fanwork challenge (though they extend it to every fandom, if someone prefers!). They have a bunch of song titles from a Canadian punk band, and you're invited to create fanworks for it!

It's an open-ended challenge--just let them know you've created something and give them a link to AO3 or wherever you've housed your work, and they'll link it on their page.

In September, we deployed a major upgrade to our HTML sanitizer (which interprets formatting tags) and introduced new features to collections! We also made a variety of fixes across different areas of AO3, including clarifying some confusing language and making new site elements translatable as part of our ongoing internationalization work.

Special thanks and welcome to first-time contributors brooke x, Jamis Gelvin, katieyang, Kylia Miskell, ömer faruk, Samridhi, and Yanpei Wang!

Details

0.9.427

On September 5, we deployed some improvements to get our HTML sanitizer up to date for HTML5 and fix a number of tiny but annoying parser-related bugs.

  • [AO3-5801] – We changed the sanitizer and parser to use Nokogiri’s newly available native HTML5 features.
  • [AO3-3282] – If your summary or notes had formatting followed by blank lines, extra blank lines would appear each time you edited those fields. Now the spacing stays the same, like it’s supposed to.
  • [AO3-4599] – We prevented the parser from modifying the formatting inside of <pre> tags, since that defeated the point of marking text as preformatted.

0.9.428

On September 8, we deployed a lot of changes by first-time contributors. If you’re interested in contributing code to AO3, check out our GitHub Contributing Guidelines.

  • [AO3-5552] – We removed some unused code as well as the tests for it.
  • [AO3-7110] – We fixed an automated test for the database data we use for development, which was failing intermittently.
  • [AO3-6921] – We made it so the commas used in series browser page titles are now translatable.
  • [AO3-6924] – The browser page title translations for some user-related pages (e.g., the Change Password page) were in the wrong place, so we moved them to the right locale file.
  • [AO3-7089] – We cleaned up some duplicate code in our automated tests.
  • [AO3-5769] – We updated the phrasing of the text you see when you hover over the “Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings” icon in the work blurb.
  • [AO3-6581] – We changed the title on the page that lists works you’ve marked for later to “Marked for Later,” so you don’t get it confused with the overall history page.
  • [AO3-6914] – We clarified the error message site admins may see when updating language codes.

0.9.429

On September 15, we did a small release to improve the technical implementation of how certain AO3 pages are accessed.

  • [AO3-5953] – Some actions, such as marking a work for later or switching back to the default site skin, could be performed by simply visiting a URL. That isn’t great for a number of reasons, including security, so we’ve updated those actions to use more standard routing.

0.9.430

On September 26, we moved collections to Elasticsearch and added collection tags and better filtering options when browsing collections.

  • [AO3-6026] – We added collections to Elasticsearch for better filtering capabilities, made it possible to tag them, and also automatically added tags to existing collections.
  • [AO3-3748] – We changed the Collections page to also list subcollections, not just top-level collections.
  • [AO3-7122] – We updated the default value of two database columns in the collections table to work better with Elasticsearch.

0.9.432

On September 28, we made two more changes as part of our collections upgrades as well as a few low-impact updates that were easy to get done at the same time.

Additionally, our deploy script accidentally bumped us a release ahead and skipped 0.9.431 so this ended up being released as 0.9.432 instead!

  • [AO3-7141] – When we moved collections to Elasticsearch, we inadvertently started sorting items on users’ Collections pages and collections’ Subcollections pages by date. We’ve changed the sorting back to alphabetical order.
  • [AO3-6133] – The service we were using to deploy code to our testing environment will be discontinued in 2026, so we switched to using GitHub Actions instead. This switch also brought us some sweet speed improvements and better integration into GitHub and Jira, so it’s a win all around!
  • [AO3-7117], [AO3-7118] – Our friendly dependency updater bumped the version of two GitHub actions.
  • [AO3-4698] – We added a missing hyphen to the browser page title for the New Challenge Sign-up page.
  • [AO3-7123] – We added the ability to filter for collections based on whether they are marked as multifandom.
