In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, a gift of your time to the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well.

Real life: I moved, after planning to since before the pandemic.

Fandom: I wrote three fics in a new fandom! That new fandom being due South. I'm pretty happy with how they turned out.

In your own space, tell us about 3 fandom resources, spaces, or communities you use or enjoy.

  • The Cold Boys Fandom Hub - This one almost feels like cheating, since this great resource for The Terror fandom is a collection of resources. Some highlights include the fandom events calendar, which lists various Terror fests/exchanges/bingos past, present, and future, and the links page, which collects other resources relevant to the show, the fandom, and the Franklin Expedition in general.

  • Aubrey/Maturin series text search - Exactly what it sounds like. Do you ever need to search the full text of the Aubreyad for every instance of a word or phrase, and get results labeled by book, chapter, and paragraph number? Here you go.

  • [community profile] ds_ficminers - One of my favorite dreamwidth communities, where users dig up and share old Due South fics that have not been archived on AO3, often with heavy use of the Wayback Machine for archiving. It is a great resource for keeping older fic from being forgotten, especially for fans new to the fandom who might not know where to look for fic off of AO3, and entries are tagged for organization. Anyone can contribute, and I find digging up old fics to share a lot of fun! I think this type of community could be a great model for other older fandoms in a similar position.

In your own space, talk about an idea you wish you had the time / talent / energy to do.

This is kind of a hard one for me. My biggest writing limitation I have recognized in myself is that I have never felt I had longfic in me. I could probably push myself to write longer stuff if I wanted to, but I'm honestly pretty content writing my little one-shots! It's just the length most of my fic ideas take, it's a type of fic I like reading, and I'm pretty happy with that.

Sometimes I make fanmixes for myself and don't share them, because they feel indulgent and like my music tastes are nothing special. So maybe I wish I could make a fanmix that felt worth sharing. But also, maybe it's fine for them just to be a private pleasure. I think I might be too easygoing for this question!

In your own space, make a list of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, and/or that you'd like someone to create or do for you.

Three is the traditional number for wishes, right?

- For fandom archives to have preservation plans! It could look a lot of ways; things like importing through Open Doors, backing up works in case of technical problems, a plan in place if an archivist is no longer able to maintain the archive, etc. I'm being selfish here, I love getting into older fandoms and it's a bummer to discover that lots of fics in a fandom are no longer accessible.

- I wish some of my fandoms had more activity in places I already am. Starsky & Hutch fandom is active on Facebook (which I don't have), and The Professionals fandom is active on LJ (ditto). Starsky & Hutch does have an active discord that I am in, but I haven't really found an equivalent for The Professionals, either on discord or DW. I know I could join those platforms if I really wanted to, and mostly I am ok with the disconnect, but hey this is the place for making wishes!

- I've attended some virtual single-fandom cons during the pandemic (SHareCon, [community profile] bistocon, Terror Camp). I had a great time at all of them, and it made me wish that more of my fandoms had virtual fancons, especially smaller fandoms that might not be able to support an in-person, multi-day con (but could support a small group of people having themed discussions/watching vids/hanging out/etc for a day online together).

Well, a few days behind, but why not jump in?

In your own space, update your fandom information!

I updated my DW and AO3 profiles to make sure that all the info there is current!

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

I'll keep it fannish.

Writing
I have fallen in and out of daily fic writing over the past year, so I am aiming to maintain a daily fic writing practice this year. My current goal is at least 100 words a day.

I also plan to participate in some-but-not-too-many exchanges, and to write both inside and outside of exchanges. I am currently signed up for Chocolate Box and plan to sign up for [community profile] smut4smut, [community profile] nonconathon, and Yuletide. I hope to also write for some fandom specific exchanges, most likely in due South or The Terror.

I don't want to hex any fics by talking about them in too much detail in public, but I have some bits written for one Succession fic, one Starsky & Hutch fic, two The Professionals fics, and one tiny fandom fic. I hope I complete all these this year!

New canons/fandoms
2021 was a year of getting into older fandoms for me. I got heavy into due South, and from there The Professionals and Starsky & Hutch. I'd like to keep going on the retro kick, but try to branch out from buddy cop shows. To that end, next on my list to try when I'm feeling an itch for a new canon are Highlander and Blake's 7.

Other
- Attend some cons, either virtually or (I'm not sure I even dare to hope) in person. On my radar:
Escapade, [community profile] fanworks, [community profile] confabcon, [community profile] con_txt, SHareCon , [community profile] bistocon
- Make friends and have a good time. :)

Challenge #11

In your own space, recommend a fannish or creative resource.

I saw a lot of the more general fannish resources that I love already recced, so I am instead going incredibly specific! The Mad Fer Our Kid Quote Archive at [livejournal.com profile] mfokquotearchiv. It's an archive of slashy quotes from Liam and Noel Gallagher, mostly about one another, for when you need some Gallaghercest inspiration or just want to go, "Wait, he really said that?".

Challenge #9

In your own space, promote at least one canon that you adore (old, new, forever fandom).

I am going with a new-ish one, because the first blushes of love seems like a good time to sing a canon's praises. I am promoting The Terror! It's a miniseries, depicting a fictionalized account of Franklin's lost expedition to the Arctic. The fictionalized part is that, well, we don't know exactly what happened so any depiction is going to be fictionalized, but also there is a magical monster killing them (along with the scurvy, starvation, freezing to death, etc.). I actually resisted watching the show for a while because I was put off by the supernatural and horror elements, but eventually I fell to the siren call of Age of Sail fiction, and then I fell hard.

Some selling points:
- It is a miniseries! Only ten hour-long episodes of your time!
- Even minor characters feel distinctive and get their own moments and friendships and relationships and stories. Which is to say: rich material for multishippers. I don't strongly have an OTP for the show, but rather, enjoy pushing any two or more of these boys together and seeing what happens.
- If you like Age of Sail fiction in general it has a lot of the good stuff (forced proximity from close quarters, a homosocial environment, manful bravery and even more manful crying, institutionalized homophobia, Victorians, sodomy, and it's friend, the lash)
- That's right, the lash. For those for whom this is a selling point: there is a flogging scene.
- You will get to have even more feelings about "Northwest Passage" by Stan Rogers than I assume everyone already does.
- It knows it's a show about colonialism and the futility of empire, these things don't go unexamined.
- Complex shades of morality, but also as much as there is a villain, there is a very fun villain.
- Hurt/comfort. Also just...Hurt.
- It's dark, but rather than everyone getting crueler as things get worse, they instead get kinder and more loving to one another which just makes it hurt more! It's awful, just awful!
- I absolutely cried my eyes out at most episodes, but also found plenty to be horny about. What more do you need from a canon?

If anyone is considering watching it and has any questions, or wants any specific content warnings, just let me know (there are certainly plenty of things one might want to be warned about). If you do decide to join me, I am happy to talk (or just squee) about it!

Challenge #8

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

From shortest to longest (but all in my preferred sweet spot of about 2-7k words), some fics that have stuck with me and that I love to revisit, with a spread of fandoms.

The Sound of Wires Crossing (1934 words) by Mosca
Fandom: Chasing Amy (1995)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Banky Edwards/Holden McNeil, Banky Edwards/Original Male Character
Characters: Banky Edwards
Summary: Banky discovers the joys of gay sex and doesn't really get over Holden.

Rec: I have a weakness for Kevin Smith movies, and in some ways Chasing Amy is the most frustrating one, in a way that really, really makes me want to read fic for it. This is one of my favorites, it is satisfying in a way that feels honest.

Pursuit of the Last Lantern (2053 words) by Vulgarweed
Fandom: Lord of the Rings - Tolkien
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Merry Brandybuck/Dernhelm of Rohan
Additional Tags: Genderqueer, Angst, Crossdressing, Awkward Sexual Situations, Comfort Sex, Deceit, Disguise, Interspecies
Summary: On the eve of the Battle of the Pelennor Field, two misfit warriors won't quite admit fear -- but they will seek comfort. There is angst, there is hope, and there is someone who is not what he seems.

Rec: I went in to Lord of the Rings knowing in my heart I would ship Sam/Frodo, and I did. What I didn't expect to ship? Merry/Eowyn. This fic was my dream come true, capturing so much of what I love about them (misfit warriors!), and crossdressing on top of that.

Diane, I Am Now Upside Down (2100 words) by cjmarlowe
Fandom: Twin Peaks
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Dale Cooper/Dennis "Denise" Bryson
Characters: Dale Cooper, Dennis "Denise" Bryson
Additional Tags: flirtation, Friendship, reminiscance, Genderqueer Character, Yuletide 2013
Summary: Things in Twin Peaks were always more complicated than they at first appeared. Both Denise Bryson and Dale's feelings for her were no exception.

Rec: Just a sweet moment between two people in a complicated situation. Dale and Denise are so mature and thoughtful here, and that has always made me love it.

Natural Law (2379 words) by trill_gutterbug
Fandom: Black Sails
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Captain Flint/John Silver
Characters: Captain Flint (Black Sails), John Silver
Additional Tags: Anal Sex, Set Some Nebulous Time Between S3 & 4 I Guess?, In Which Trill Continues to Name Fics after Star Trek Episodes Because Why the Eff Not, Some Internalised Homophobia/Sex Shame, Dorks in Love
Summary: They've been fucking for three weeks.

Rec: Hot smut that feels precisely true for the ship.

Don't Say A Word (4331 words) by orphan_account
Fandom: Metal Gear
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Major Character Death
Relationships: Otacon/Solid Snake
Characters: Sunny Emmerich, Sunny Gurlukovich, Otacon (Metal Gear), Solid Snake
Additional Tags: post MGS4, Grieving, Canon Divergence, Death
Summary: Now in her teens, Sunny finds herself drawn back home, only to realize that her father is looking less and less like Otacon these days. (Post old!Snake death, grieving and rebuilding. A bit of canon divergence cus I wanted the Jupiter family to get more time together, don't look at me)

Rec: After MGS4 this was exactly the fic I went looking for and was so happy to find existed. Otacon and Sunny-centric fic exploring grief and family and love.

Like Unto a Man (6519 words) by disenchanted
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Terror (TV 2018)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings, Rape/Non-Con
Relationships: Captain Francis Crozier/Cornelius Hickey, others
Characters: Captain Francis Crozier, Cornelius Hickey
Additional Tags: Alcohol Withdrawal, Dreams and Nightmares, Psychic Bond, Mind Sex, Crimes & Criminals, Identity Issues, psychic sex dreams, posthumanism, Underage Sex, Crozier is Protestant
Summary: While Crozier dries out, he dreams of a man on Terror.

Rec: Really digs into the gritty, nasty appeal of Crozier/Hickey through freaky nasty psychic dream sex.

Challenge #7

Promote/Rec/Sing the Praises of Yourself!

- I am a good friend and partner.
- I have a strong sense of myself and what is important to me.
- I have gotten less shy about writing porn (which is what I have always wanted to write, really) in the last year and actually wrote some things I am proud of on that front: my first RPF, my first original work, and my first noncon.
- It's not something that's particularly publicly visible, but I put a lot of hard work and time into my volunteering at the OTW.
- I am quite hot.

Challenge #6

In your own space, make a list — anything between one and ten things is a sweet spot, but don't feel constrained by that! - of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, or that you'd like someone to make for you. Are you dying for podfic of your writing? Do you need icons for a character that doesn't get much fanart? Is there a story you want to read? Are you looking for new canons to get into? Would you like a collaborator for a project?

- I am watching due South but it is slow going and I wish I had somebody who had already seen it and loves it to yell about it with as I go. I could post about it to the void, but my favorite is having somebody I can send those immediate, mid-episode thoughts and questions directly. I love getting the "superfan commentary track" ("did you know that while they were filming this scene that X" or "You are coming up on a very famously slashy scene :D", that sort of thing) on things I am watching.

- More kinkmemes! I love the chaotic horny energy of a kinkeme, and if I had my way, there would be one for every new or old fandom I love (and Dreamwidth is my favorite place for them). Even seeing an active kinkmeme for a fandom I'm not in warms my heart.

- I wish there was community for shipping and/or canon manifestos. [community profile] fancake is great for individual fic recs, but I love to be convinced and read about why a ship/canon is good (and I'm a multishipper! I can be convinced on a lot!). I always seek them out (on [community profile] crack_van or [community profile] ship_manifesto) when I get into an older canon, and I wish there was such a place for current canons.

- I'll end the list with my most specific wish, which is a very particular fic craving I have been having: fluffy and domestic post-canon Leverage OT3 Eliot Spencer mpreg.

Challenge #4

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

My one big concrete goal for this year is to get a new job. I don't hate my current job by any means, but I feel like I am reaching the point where I've gotten all I hoped to get out of it and it is time to move on.

Challenge #3

Pimp Your Favorite Communities, Fests or Challenges!

(Broken up roughly into a few categories.)

For cons, I've had great times at [community profile] fanworks and [community profile] con_txt.

Some multifandom communities I really enjoy on here include:
[community profile] fancake - for recs
[community profile] fandomcalendar - for exchanges
[community profile] historium - for historical fandom news

For fandom-specific communities, [community profile] britcomcom (British comedy) and [community profile] lettherebelove (Oasis RPF) are both good stuff.

I have great fondness for themed multi-fandom fests and exchanges (I have not participated in really any single fandom exchanges, now that I think about it) and love a strong theme. Some favorites that I have enjoyed either participating in or just reading are:
[community profile] smutswap (porn!)
[community profile] relationshipping (incest!)
[community profile] nonconathon (noncon!)
[community profile] unusual_bearings (mpreg*)
*and other various non-traditional pregnancy situations

Challenge #2

In your own space, talk about your fannish history.

Oh man, this is a fun one for me because my fannish history is extremely meandering. I kept only just barely not getting into transformative fandom for...many years, and also have strong lurker tendencies. Put behind a cut, because the description is also extremely meandering.

Decided to jump in late and do this years Snowflake challenge, since I haven't done one before!

Challenge #1

In your own space, introduce yourself!

I'm libraralien! Most of my engagement with fandom is as a reader, though I do write as well, and I really enjoy exchanges and attending cons. I still consider myself a fandom latercomer, since I only really got in around 2013, and am a tumblr/AO3 native. As an AO3 native, so all my fic can be found over there. I also volunteer for the OTW, and try to "give back" to fandom that way.

I dabble in a lot of fandoms and occasionally fall deeply and passionately into one in particular for a while. I rarely really leave any fandom once I am in, even as my enthusiasm might come and go.
I read a fair amount of published books as well as fic, so I have lots of tiny book canons. Some larger fandoms (if I listed every small fandom, this list would be very long) I have been in include: Hannibal, Black Sails, Star Trek DS9, Lord of the Rings, Song of Ice and Fire, Aubrey-Maturin Novels, Metal Gear, and Leverage. Lately I have been getting into The Terror, Oasis RPF, due South, and British Comedy RPF. I have a strong weakness for historical, and in particular Age of Sail, canons.
